Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Are You Grown Up Yet? (Quick Test)

Here is a test. It is only a test.

It's from an article on The Teenage Brain. Don't cheat and search for the article. The question: What emotion is the woman in this picture experiencing?

Supposedly, 100 percent of adults got it right in a study and only 50 percent of the teenagers. I'm afraid I got it wrong. Does that explain why I still don't think I'm a grown-up? Are any of the rest of you outliers, or is it ... just me?

http://www.parade.com/images/-v5/news/2010/1128/emotion-test.jpg

Btw teens supposedly rely on the amygdala to interpret emotional states of others -- the amygdala processes memories and emotions -- whereas adults rely on the prefrontal cortex, which involves reason and forethought.

But sheesh. I reasoned it out, and I STILL got her "emotional state" wrong! Although, actually, I think I'm right and the 100 percent of officially certified adults got it wrong. This might explain something about me ...

What did you guess?

My son, a real genuine teenager, guessed "freaked out because someone is going to suck out her eyeballs." I'm not sure how they'd have graded that one.

"What did you guess? "

I said "angry", but in a more colloquial and intense wording.

My guess was revulsion - either at the lousy dental work done to this person, or at the results of his/her sex change operation.

8 out of 10 for me. Not bad considering I was only 4YO when the '60s ended.

Really, I scored 7 out of 9 since watergate happened in the '70s. Perhaps the person that made up the test enjoyed themselve in the '60s just a little too much. either that or they ate the brown acid!!:)

You beat me. Only got 8 out of 10. Messed up the music questions, actually. (How embarrassing.) Not a Who fan, and must have used the wrong part of my brain for the Woodstock question. Still, did better than the photo one. I guess I passed.

Does that make me an adolescent baby boomer? (Even though most of what I really remember from the 60s is, like, that if I wore my mom's sweater with a belt on it I could pretend it was a miniskirt?)

"Your score: 9 out of 10

Groovy
All those years of listening to Cream records have paid off. "

I got lucky with the feminine mystique and living IN Birmingham kinda made that question a gimme.
I missed the Easy Rider question: I said ludes but I guess ludes came along later. Didn't they hide the cocaine in their gas tanks? Yum, yum.

That astounds me - how does anyone get that wrong? I will have to test my teen first chance I get ... mebbe I'd better test my husband too.

What do other people guess is her emotion? I can't think what the other possibilities could be.

My first reaction was either "mad at her teenager" or "driven mad by her teenager." :-)

Of course, I knew THAT wouldn't be the right response ... but I did really think the answer would be "woman faking shock or anger." I thought we were actually meant to identify the over-the-top fakeness. But apparently not. So much for being part of that flawless adult 100 percent!

If I'm wrong, though, does that mean the photographer was turning into a werewolf? I mean, she's looking right at him ... her ... it ... !!!

Thats easy. The emotion?

Its me while I sleep, encompassing all emotions, subliminally of course.

But to answer you question "Are you grown up yet?"
Again, easy............ never.

edit- I'm wrong. Does this mean...
Is that a pimple? My parents don't love me. I wonder if Susie Q will go to the prom with me. I'm horny. I hope coach puts me in the starting line up tonight. I'm hungry. Where is the food? I hate this class. Teacher Snuffleupagus always gives us too much homework. I need to text.

Congrats. You appear to be the only Officially Adult Person in this thread. The lady with bad dental work and bugged-out eyes is evidently supposed to be experiencing Fear. Perhaps from reading her acting reviews?

The whole story is quite interesting, though, particularly if you have a teenager. It's about the teenage brain. (And here I thought that was a contradiction in terms ...)

Why is there a right or wrong answer? Next thing you know psychiatrists will be telling patients their interpretations of Rorschach ink blots are wrong. "sorry Mr. Gore, but that is a monarch butterfly, not an Atlantic cod."

Because it's about reading other people's emotions, which they do really have, whereas ink blots are just ink blots.

On the other hand, you've got a valid point. Is there only one answer? Do people only have one emotion? And is the model for photos in a test like that REALLY experiencing that emotion? If not, how do we know "boredom" wouldn't be the right answer? Maybe she was thinking, "when do I get paid for this?"

Seems to me it's really a test about accurately interpreting the culturally constructed external signs of apparent emotion (exaggerated facial cues) in a clearly artifical and formalized context (a lab or "test" setting) where you've tacitly agreed to play by the Rules of the Game and set aside your sense of absurdity, your B.S. detector, and so on for the duration. Which is a different skill altogether. And one at which I'm sure adults are, indeed, quite a bit better at than teens.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's valid. I've shown it to a range of people and the answers are all over the place, between ages, men/women etc. I thought it was obvious it was fear, but I can also see how other interpretations are possible, and who's to say the people who see "fear" aren't just projecting?
My husband thought it was completely freaky and wouldn't even venture a guess, just said "I dunno but get her away from me."

My BS detector goes off in any quiz in Parade magazine, or I ought to say, most magazines.
That lady looked angry to me. She looked like one of Elizabeth's Taylor's snarling faces in, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'.
Don't the A level actors get paid the big bucks to portray emotion? Sometimes 2 or 3 concurrently, or in seconds.

The caption says "take our test," but the photo would be from the brain development study discussed in the article -- U of Utah and a Mass hospital.

Perv's is so old fashioned rasta. Let's go with what they really are down deep, predators.
I guess that applies easily with your first two examples as well, unfortunately with few exceptions.

predetors? sure, those kind too.
I can look at a person and tell their sexual orientation...since I can remember.
Remember an old Maury Povich show, where he had on some transexuals, "Male or Female". I never got any wrong.

Its all in the eyes (I avoid mirrors-haha)
